Conn. school halts handing out yearbook after Hitler quote discovered

HARTFORD, Conn. — A quote by Adolf Hitler inserted into a Connecticut high school's 2021 yearbooks has halted distribution of the yearbook and police have been called to investigate.

A student using a false name submitted the quote printed in the yearbook of Glastonbury High School, which was being distributed, Principal Nancy Bean wrote to students and parents on Friday. The quote under a student’s photo was attributed to George Floyd, the Black man killed by police one year ago in Minnesota, a photo of the yearbook entry sent to The Hartford Courant Monday afternoon showed.

The quote from the Nazi dictator, a believer in the power of propaganda to move the masses, was, “It is a quite special secret pleasure how the people around us fail to realize what is really happening to them.”

Bean would not describe the quote, but she wrote: “We are saddened and distressed by what happened. Acts of bias, bullying and cruelty are not acceptable at our school. We are committed to ensuring all Glastonbury High School students feel safe and supported.”

“We are currently investigating the source of the quote,” Bean wrote. “Due to the nature of the incident, this matter has also been referred to the police.”

Police spokesman Lt. Corey Davis confirmed that police are investigating, but said he did not have any more information to release..

The school suspended yearbook distribution to seniors and directed students to return the books to the main office “in order to insert the victim’s proper quote,” Bean wrote.

Bean said Monday that the yearbooks likely do not have to be reprinted. To protect the victim’s privacy and because the incident is being investigated, she said she could not provide further details.
