Congressman warns of China's power to disrupt US infrastructure

Seth Moulton United States Representative

China's actions and potential infiltration into critical infrastructure in the United States have raised alarm bells among experts and lawmakers. Congressman Seth Moulton, a Democrat from Massachusetts and member of the House Select Committee on China, shed light on the concerns during a recent interview.

Moulton explained that while evidence of China's activities has been presented in intelligence briefings, many Americans struggle to grasp the direct impact these actions could have on their lives. The congressman warned that China's positioning itself to have the power to disrupt basic infrastructure in the US, resulting in citizens potentially losing access to necessities such as water and electricity.

The threat from China to America's infrastructure is not only limited to physical disruptions but also extends to economic consequences. Moulton mentioned that if China succeeds in its plan to invade Taiwan, there is a working theory that they would utilize their control over US infrastructure to discourage any American intervention. This could be a means to dissuade the US from defending Taiwan's democracy.

The congressman further highlighted that if China were to gain control over Taiwan, they would have a monopoly on the global chip market. This would grant them significant influence over the availability of devices such as iPhones, computers, and other technological products, potentially inflicting severe economic damage on the United States.

The timing of China's potential utilization of their capability to disrupt US infrastructure remains uncertain, with the invasion of Taiwan serving as a hypothetical trigger. Moulton stressed that China could employ this power at any time to further its strategic goals.

The concerns raised by Congressman Moulton reflect a growing apprehension within the US government regarding China's intentions and actions. As geopolitical tensions between the two nations continue to rise, safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring national security has become an urgent priority for lawmakers.

Efforts are underway to enhance cybersecurity measures, promote supply chain independence, and bolster international alliances to counterbalance China's influence. The issue of China's potential infiltration into US infrastructure remains a complex and ever-evolving challenge, warranting close attention and proactive measures to protect national interests.
