CHICAGO _ After attending funerals for slain teenagers, Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., always knew there was a possibility that someone close to him could get hurt from gun violence.
"It is so unfortunate when these tragedies continue to occur and reoccur and somehow or another our society has not been able to find and exact the answers and solutions," Davis said early Saturday at a news conference.
His 15-year-old grandson, Jovan Wilson, was shot to death in a home invasion about 6:45 p.m. Friday in the boy's Englewood home, police said.
"I do know that I grieve for my family," Davis said. "I grieve for the young man who pulled the trigger. I grieve for his family, his parents, his friends, some of whom will never see him again."
Jovan was at his home with an uncle, his 16-year-old sister, 14-year-old brother and 8-year-old brother when two teenage assailants broke into the home and began arguing with Jovan, police and Davis said. The boy's mother had left the home to pick up food.
One of the assailants, a 15-year-old boy, pulled out a gun and shot Jovan in the head, Davis said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 17-year-old girl was the other assailant, Davis said. Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, said the incident was not random, and there was a history between the offenders and the teen.
Jovan, a sophomore at Perspectives High School, loved sports and rap music, Davis said. He said his son's grades had improved, and the family had urged him to stay at home at night.
"He was a typical 15-year-old," Davis said. "He liked basketball, if you listened to him he was a basketball star, but he liked basketball and music. He was an avid sports fan, he knew all about, you know, the stats of different players," Davis said.
Jovan's father, Stacey Wilson, said he had just given his son money to get a haircut, and he thought the next time he would talk to him was about an appropriate haircut to get.
"It's going to take me some time to grieve," he said.
One other person was killed in a separate shooting.
A 27-year-old man was killed in the Gage Park neighborhood, police said. He was found early Saturday morning in the rear of a yard on the South Side. He had been shot in the head and his body.
The man, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Ten other people were wounded in Chicago shootings since Friday morning.
