Congressman demands Meghan and Harry stripped of titles for 'interfering in US election'

A congressman is demanding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stripped of their royal titles for allegedly 'interfering' in the upcoming US election.

Republican lawmaker Jason Smith of Missouri hit out after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry urged Americans to 'reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity' in a joint broadcast.

Mr Smith was due to send a letter making his request to the British Ambassador to the United States Karen Pierce on Friday afternoon, reports said.

He argued Meghan's political opinions are 'thinly disguised' which he says is a breach of the British Royal Family's neutrality.

This came after she dubbed it the 'most important election of our lifetime'.

Mr Smith called on the UK government to ask the Queen to strip Meghan and Harry of their titles.

In the letter, seen by the Daily Mail, Mr Smith said: "As you know, the British Royal Family has long observed a policy of strict neutrality in regard to political matters.

"I am therefore concerned by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's recent comments regarding the United States Presidential Election, especially given international conversations surrounding foreign interference in our elections and the Duke's status as a guest of the United States."

He said he believes the titles and privileges the Duke and Duchess hold prevent them from separating their personal comments with comments made in their position, despite the fact they are no longer working royals.

He added: "I respectfully request the British Government ensure The Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer attempt to interfere in our election or be stripped of all titles, styles, and privileges which they currently retain."
