Congress To Vote On Lakin-Riley Act For Immigration Reform

Debate on Argentina's President Javier Milei's economic reform bill at the National Congress, in Buenos Aires

Today on Capitol Hill, Congress is set to vote on the Lakin-Riley Act, a legislation proposed in response to the tragic murder of a 22-year-old Georgia student by an illegal immigrant. The act aims to require ICE to detain illegal immigrants charged with theft, following the accused killer of Riley being arrested multiple times but always released.

Simultaneously, President Biden is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address later in the day. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who recently returned from cancer treatment, expressed feeling great and blessed with a clean bill of health.

Regarding the Lakin-Riley Act, Scalise anticipates a robust debate and hopes for an overwhelming vote. He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of illegal immigrants committing crimes and being released back into communities, highlighting the need for border control.

Furthermore, there is a growing unity within the Republican Party around former President Trump. Many prominent figures, including Mitch McConnell and Joni Ernst, have expressed their support for Trump, citing his previous accomplishments in areas such as the economy, border security, and foreign relations.

Scalise noted the increasing support for Trump's return to politics, not only among Republicans but also among Democrats, African-Americans, and Hispanics. He attributed this to a sense of 'buyer's remorse' among those who voted for Biden and a desire to return to the perceived prosperity of the Trump era.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the contrast between the Trump and Biden administrations remains a focal point for many voters. While some emphasize the challenges faced during Trump's presidency, others highlight the successes and stability experienced during that time.
