Congress demands rollback of electricity tariff

The opposition Congress party has demanded the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) to rollback the enhanced electricity tariff.

A memorandum was submitted to this extent to the TSERC officials on Monday by a Congress delegation consisting of Kisan Congress national vice-president M. Kodanda Reddy, TPCC senior vice-president Mallu Ravi, AICC spokesperson Dasoju Shravan, general secretary Harkara Venu Gopal among others.

“The people of Telangana are completely disappointed and frustrated with the unprecedented enhancement of electricity tariff. Lower slabs of domestic consumers of zero and 100 units and 100 and 200 units are highly taxing the poor and middle classes. We are also deeply concerned about the kind of losses the Discoms are facing due to the lopsided policies of the present TRS government. Never in the history did the Dicoms have accumulated losses to the tune of ₹60,000 crore,” said the Congress delegation in the memorandum wondering why the government of Telangana is not clearing its dues to Discoms worth ₹13,600 crore, of which ₹9,000 crore belong to lift irrigation projects.

The other demands of the Congress include taking stringent measures to bail out Discoms from their losses, ensuring that the government of Telangana clears all its dues, inquiring into all the irregular power purchase agreements which are causing exorbitant losses to the government, holding all-party meeting to review the present power policy and its administration, and releasing of white paper on the entire finances of Discoms and the future plan of its sustenance.

Mr. Kodanda Reddy said that the TSERC has every right to bring pressure on the government and collect dues, and it must be taken up immediately.
