IMPHAL: AICC leader and in-charge of Manipur, Bhakta Charan Das, while flaying chief minister N Biren Singh for his words "Give us votes, we will give you peace" to the people, has stated that the CM should amend his words.
Biren made the statement while addressing a BJP political rally in Bishnupur district on Wednesday. The CM also stated that the present BJP-led government has brought back smiles to the faces of people in just four and a half years.
Manipur will go to the polls early next year to elect 60 legislators for which the state has witnessed stepped-up canvassing, mostly in the valley districts.
"It is highly objectionable and totally unconstitutional. The honorable chief minister should amend these words ...he should not take the people of Manipur for granted," Bhakta told reporters at a media conference at Manipur PCC head office here on Friday.
"At least he (CM) should respect the position that he is holding," the Congress leader said. "How far it (such comment) is acceptable from the chief minister after serving around 5 years and the election is knocking on the door?" questioned Bhakta.
"Asking voters, give us vote we will give you peace. If you don't give us vote it means we will give you unrest, we will not give peace. This is an indirect threat to the voters and people of Manipur," Bhakta added.
Has he (CM) got any right to teach about peace or advocate about peace to the masses in Manipur? Bhakta asked.
Recalling the 2017 state assembly polls (in which BJP won 21 seats while Congress grabbed 28) and the saffron party had meticulously managed to form the government with its allies, Bhakta said they (BJP) "made things possible in an impossible situation".
Criticising the state government's "Go to Village" mission, the AICC leader said the programme they have given now should have been done in the last four and a half years.
