Congregation's prayer answered after church gets indoor toilet - after 165 YEARS

A congregation's prayers has been answered after its church finally spent a penny and got an indoor toilet after 165 YEARS.

Desperate parishioners in St Cyrus, Mearns, have raged against their latrine since the church was founded in 1854.

For years, the Coastal Parish Church has not been fit for purpose and the local flock have had to run the gauntlet accessing a dilapidated toilet block outside.

But they are now feeling flushed after five years of fundraising including teaming up with local businesses and accessing a grant to raise the £80,000 needed for the state-of-the-art ablutions.

Property convenor Marion Brownlie said: “The church has always been the centre of the community, but it has tailed away.

“We were constrained by what we could do as the building was not fit for purpose.

And she added: “We had so much work done by volunteers – the kitchen was donated by a member of the congregation and we had a TV and camera donated which we can use if there is a big funeral.

“If the downstairs is full we can use upstairs with the service viewed on a monitor.

“Members of the congregation have done everything from dismantling the dilapidated old toilet block outside to carrying out painting work which saved us money.”
