Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi today emerged as the surprise winner in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s tightly contested presidential vote.

The electoral commission said Mr Tshisekedi received more than seven million votes (38 per cent), a million more than rival opposition leader Martin Fayulu who has denounced it as a fraud.

The relatively untested Mr Tshisekedi will be the first opposition challenger to win since the DR Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960.

If confirmed, he will replace current president Joseph Kabila who is stepping down after 18 years in office.
