Confusion over social distancing walks as 'mixed messages' lockdown speech ridiculed

Boris Johnson's speech this evening has been ridiculed for sending mixed messages regarding 'social distancing walks'.

From Wednesday people in England who are not considered 'at risk' are allowed as much outdoor exercise as they please.

And people have been told to go to work tomorrow if they cannot work from home - but avoid public transport.

The perceived 'mixed messages' in the speech - not helped by the fact it only applies to England and not the devolved nations - have been widely ridiculed on social media.

One social media user wrote: "Work from home but go out as often as you like when you like.

"But don’t go outside to go to work if you don’t have to.

"In fact, stay at home unless you want to stay outside all day long as long as you’re 2m away from everyone else."

Another wrote: "When the other countries in the UK are telling their people to 'stay at home' over the 'stay alert' slogan. It's clear their is a lack of clarity and clearly mixed messages."

Even journalists were getting confused about the guidelines with GMB presenter Piers Morgan getting into a debate with LBC presenter Shelagh Fogarty who said she had already been on 'socially distant walks' with a friend.

This was not allowed in previous measures but is from Wednesday, government officials clarified to the PA news agency after the speech.

In a significant change, a Government official said that as long as a two-metre distance is maintained, people will be allowed to sunbathe or chat with one other person from a different household.

It means couples, friends and relatives who have stayed apart for almost two months can at last reunite in person, provided they stay the appropriate distance away from each other.

The new measure, in place from Wednesday, was initially unclear, as Boris Johnson indicated in his speech that sunbathing could still only be done with members of the same household.

He said: "You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports, but only with members of your own household."

But a Government official confirmed on Sunday evening that as long as they stay two metres apart, people will be allowed to sunbathe or chat with one other person from another household.

The Metropolitan Police Federation  (MPF) said that, despite its assertions to the contrary, the Government is sending out mixed messages.

MPF’s Ken Marsh told BBC Radio 4 that authorities “needed to be firmer right from the beginning”.

He said: “It’s been quite wishy-washy how we’ve gone about it.

“Had we been very stringent from the off – it is painful, but it’s not overly painful in terms of what you’re actually being asked to do – then I think we would have a better result now.”
