Confusion over cinema reopening date in Ireland as all mentions removed from plan

As Ireland's summer reopening plan starts today, many industries are looking forward to welcoming the public back in the next few weeks.

But there has been major confusion about one specific form of entertainment - cinemas.

Initially, after the Taoiseach had addressed the nation at the end of last month, it seemed that cinemas would be allowed to re-open alongside other amenities on June 7th.

This was officially listed on the Government's website as part of the plan from officials.

The news was widely shared on social media, as fans and owners rejoiced and looked forward to the reopening.

However, the Government website has since been updated to remove cinemas from the June 7th list.

The gov.ie website currently reads that "preparation for the safe reopening of cinemas and theatres in June subject to public health advice."

That puts it in the 'next steps' category - i.e things that can reopen as long as things stay steady in May.

Charlene Lydon, film programmer for Dublin’s Light House and Galway’s Pálás cinemas, told Newstalk that Thursday was a 'rollercoaster' for cinema operators.

“It was quite bizarre. Micheál Martin made his address on Thursday evening - and on the Government website there was a list of everything that was going to open.

“Listed under June 7th was cinemas - so we all got extremely excited… but only for about 20-30 minutes. Then it was taken down quietly.

“Over the course of the next hour people realised it had been removed, and didn’t know what was going on. It was quite stressful.

"Nobody has told us anything.

“While it does look like we still might be able to open in June - all going well - we don’t have a date, which is really difficult.

"If you’re trying to run a business you want to get in touch with staff and let them know when they can get back to work, start ordering your popcorn and all those things.”
