Confusion as blood vial mix-up leaves Nottingham GP practice unable to do tests

A Nottingham GP practice was left unable to carry out blood tests after a mix-up with the supply of blood vials.

Elmswood Surgery in Sherwood were left with zero vials and were therefore not able to carry out blood tests yesterday (Wednesday, September 29) due to the confusion.

Dr Irfan Malik, a GP at the surgery, said the practice was due for delivery, however it did not receive the vials.

He initially thought it was due to a previous NHS shortage after issues with blood vial suppliers Beckton Dickinson, which had forced health providers to ration the items.

However, the shortage was in fact due to a mix-up with the supplying of the item, which Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group say was not a fault of theirs.

They added that the issue had now been resolved after they contacted the surgery to provide support with how to order further supplies.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Dr Malik said that their usual morning clinic, where they carry out blood tests, had to be cancelled.

He said their “only option” was to send patients to places elsewhere, such as hospitals.

The test tubes are used for a variety of blood tests, including a full blood count to check for anaemia and keeping track of blood sugar and vitamin levels.
