Confusing 'extra arm' spotted in government graphic urging people to stay home

With lockdown extended until at least May 7, it's imperative we all continue to do our bit in helping in the fight against coronavirus.

The more we follow the guidelines to stay at home and use social distancing, the sooner we will all hopefully be able to return to some sort of normality.

It's a message being pushed by the government with messages on TV, as well as places like Spotify and social media.

The verified UK Prime Minister Twitter account @10DowningStreet has been using a series of graphics with the message 'For staying safe there's no place like home' as part of the campaign.

But one of the images used showing two women sharing a bowl of popcorn during a night in on the sofa with the dog has drawn attention on social media for a very different reason.

People thought they had spotted an extra arm with a dark sleeve resting on the leg (@10DowningStreet /Twitter)

Some users on Twitter think they spotted a bizarre extra arm resting on a leg, arguing that the hand doesn't appear to belong to either of them - or the dog.

One asked: "Where is the black sleeved arm coming from???"

Another replied: "This picture is weird - what’s happening below the bowl and whose hand is emerging from the dog?"

A third said: "Hundreds of Britons stayed home figuring out whose arm was whose. Good strategy."

Attempting to solve the illusion, one suggested: "Maybe the dog is almost finished eating the next door neighbour?"

Some gave a more rational answer, suggesting it belongs to the woman on the left, with angle and shadow playing tricks on the mind.

One wrote: "It’s not photoshop, the girl with the blonde hair has got long arms - her sleeve is in the shadow so it looks dark!"

Another, clearly frustrated by the suggestions the dog had been on a rampage, argued: "Why are people in the replies struggling with this.

"They each have one hand on the bowl, the mystery arm is the left hand of the woman in the beige top, you can see the edge of her beige sleeve in the shadow if you zoom in (it’s not a black sleeve)."
