Confused elderly couple drove for 15 hours after getting lost on way to buy caravan

A 96-year-old driver and his 90-year-old partner had to be escorted home by police after spending nearly 15 hours on the road.

The elderly couple told North Yorkshire Police they set off to visit caravan dealer in Thirsk, at 2pm on September 13, a place they claim they have been many times.

But police were called in the early hours of Monday, to reports of a possible drink-driver on the A168 driving 20-25mph, YorkshireLive reports.

The car was stopped just prior to Roecliffe industrial estate roundabout at around 4.40am after what police said could have turned into "the worlds slowest pursuit".

Officers found the confused couple trying to get home in Knaresborough.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police confirmed that officers escorted the couple home.

"We submitted forms to DVLA over medical concerns we have over the driver and very strongly advised him to stop driving for his and everyone else’s safety," said the spokesperson.

"It's a difficult conversation to have, but be honest with your relative s and friends you have medical concerns over. Tell them to stop and report them to DVLA."

They added: "This driver was nearly 15 hours into a 40-minute journey, the ending could have been much worse."
