Confirmed: Nottingham Forest defender completes January transfer to Greek club

Defender Nicholas Ioannou has completed a loan move from Nottingham Forest to Aris Thessaloniki.

The Cyprus international will spend the rest of the season with the Greek side.

Ioannou has featured just five times since his move to the City Ground from APOEL in September, when he put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

His last game was the 1-1 draw at Luton Town back in October, when he was sent off in the first half at Kenilworth Road.

Since then, Yuri Ribeiro has gone on to cement his place as first-choice at left-back, while Forest also have Gaetan Bong on the books.

Trimming squad numbers is a priority for boss Chris Hughton during the transfer window.

And while Ioannou is the first departure this month, he is unlikely to be the last, with Hughton having confirmed Tendayi Darikwa could also move on, if an opportunity arises.

Announcing the deal, Forest said: "Nottingham Forest can confirm that Nicholas Ioannou has left the club to join Greek side Aris Thessaloniki on loan until the end of the season.

"The club would like to wish Nicholas the best of luck for the rest of the 2020-21 season."

Prior to Ioannou’s switch being announced, Hughton said in his pre-match press conference it was likely the player would be leaving.

“It’s never for me to speak about individual clubs, but what I can say is we have spoken to Ioannou about the possibility of going out - going out on loan and playing games,” he said.

“That is something we are actively trying to do, but it’s not my responsibility to name clubs.

“It’s fair to say there is a good chance he’ll be going out.”
