Confirmed: Newcastle United old boy Hatem Ben Arfa lands new club

Former Newcastle United playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa has landed a new club.

Ben Arfa was a free agent after leaving previous club Real Valladolid in Spain.

And the 33-year-old has now returned to his native France to sign for Bordeaux.

It is the French international's ninth club of his career, having previously had spells with Lyon, Marseille, Hull City (loan), Nice, Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes, along with Newcastle and Valladolid.

Ben Arfa joined Newcastle from Marseille in 2010 on an initial loan deal before making a permanent move to St James' Park.

He went on to make 86 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 14 goals along the way and establishing himself as a favourite with the fans.

However, his time on Tyneside turned sour following a breakdown in his relationship with then-manager Alan Pardew and he left for Nice in 2015.

Former Newcastle chief scout Graham Carr recently revealed how he had to persuade Mike Ashley to sanction a deal for Ben Arfa.

I learned you had to be positive with Mike, convince him. One of my first dealings with him, I was in North Shields with my wife and was told to be ready for a conference call," he told the Daily Mail.

"I panicked, I'd never been on one, I was driving around the coast charging my phone! We started talking about Ben Arfa. Mike had this thing with a 4-4-2, first-team players on £40k a week and understudies on £20k.

"He couldn't understand why we'd want Hatem and Jonas Gutierrez, two left-wingers, on £40k. I knew Hatem could be brilliant, so I cut in, 'He's a No 10, actually, and he can cut in from the right'. That was it, done."
