Confirmed: Liverpool Premier League title will NOT come with an asterisk

Liverpool’s first ever Premier League title win will NOT be marked by an asterisk, despite the season concluding in unorthodox fashion.

Manchester City’s defeat at Chelsea on Thursday ensured the league championship would be heading to Anfield this term, ending a 30-year wait.

But the 2019-20 campaign won’t just be etched into the minds of supporters on the red half of Merseyside.

The advent of the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the English top-flight being brought to a halt in March - a suspension that went on to last three months.

Liverpool’s title charge was cast into doubt during that period as the possibility of a null and void campaign was raised.

But, while that outcome has ultimately been avoided, attempts by rival fans to discredit the Reds’ success have continued.

The idea of that lengthy mid-season hiatus being noted by an asterisk in the record books has been regularly floated on social media in recent weeks.

However, the Premier League have now confirmed that this will not be the case.

Given that each team are set to play their scheduled fixtures home and away, league chiefs believe the 2019-20 season will have been concluded in legitimate fashion.

And they will not give special treatment to Liverpool’s victory regardless of the unusual circumstances necessitated by Covid-19.
