Confirmed coronavirus cases in Bristol increase again (Wednesday April 15) as UK death toll surges

Bristol now has 369 confirmed coronavirus cases following a rise of 15 from yesterday.

New figures published by Public Health England today (Wednesday, April 15) also revealed South Gloucestershire has 222 cases, an increase of three.

While the number of people infected with the virus in North Somerset has jumped to 124 following four new cases.

It's likely the real figure is in the thousands however because the government is currently only testing the most severe patients and some NHS workers.

Coviid-19 -related deaths across the UK rose to 12,958, although this figure is only made up of hospital deaths.

There are fears it may be even higher when coronavirus-related deaths in care homes are taken into account.

Meanwhile, China's death toll only stands at 3,342, Italy's at 21,067 and Spain at 18,706. Globally there has been 128,886.

In England 76,371 people have tested positive for Covid-19, 6,748 in Scotland, 6,118 in Wales and 2,088 in Northern Ireland.

Among those infected in our city is Brian Harvey who is currently lying in intensive care at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), having just awoken from weeks in an induced coma.

All his wife and three children want to do is sit at his bedside and hold his hand.

Due to visiting restrictions in place across the country, their only communication since his admission has been via video calls, with hospital staff holding up his camera phone to allow them to see him.
