Confirmed Chelsea side vs Zenit: Thomas Tuchel makes five changes as Jorginho and Mount return

Thomas Tuchel has made five changes to his Chelsea side for tonight's Champions League group stage opener against Zenit.

The Blues begin the defence of their European Cup at home to the Russian champions at Stamford Bridge, and Tuchel has opted to select an experienced XI.

Edouard Mendy, the reigning UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year, is between the posts for Chelsea and will be attempting to maintain his form in the Champions League; the Senegal international conceded just three goals last term as the Blues lifted the big-eared trophy.

Cesar Azpilicueta returns on the right side of the back three and Andreas Christensen is back in the centre. Thiago Silva, unsurprisingly after he started against Aston Villa on Saturday, is rested. Antonio Rudiger keeps his spot on the left.

Reece James, suspended for the weekend victory over Aston Villa, starts at right wing-back. And on the opposite flank, Marcos Alonso keeps his place. Ben Chilwell is yet again on the bench.

After his difficult debut, Saul Niguez drops to the substitutes bench with Jorginho reinstated into the midfield. With N'Golo Kante not risked, Mateo Kovacic is Chelsea's other central midfielder.

Mason Mount is restored to the attack and is expected to take his position on the left of the attacking three. On the right is Hakim Ziyech, who has been given another chance to impress Tuchel.

Romelu Lukaku, who has scored three goals in his opening three games following his club-record signing from Inter Milan, leads the Blues attack.

With the ability to name 12 substitutes, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, Malang Sarr and Lewis Baker are all on the bench.

Chelsea: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger; James, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso; Mount; Ziyech, Lukaku

Chelsea substitutes: Kepa, Bergstrom, Silva, Werner, Loftus-Cheek, Chalobah, Saul, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, Havertz, Sarr
