Confirmed Arsenal XI vs Newcastle: Pepe, Lacazette on bench as Nelson and Willock start

Summer signings Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz and Dani Ceballos will have to wait for their Arsenal debuts after being named on the substitutes' bench for Arsenal's Premier League opener against Newcastle.

Alexandre Lacazette has also failed to shake off an ankle injury, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the line and youngsters Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson providing support.

Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac did not travel with the matchday squad after "further security incidents" involving the pair, who were caught up in an attempted carjacking in Golders Green, north London, last month.

Unai Emery is also without Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin (both knee), Konstantinos Mavropanos and Emile Smith Rowe (both groin). Lacazette and Pepe were both the subject of late fitness tests but travelled with the squad, as did Luiz.

Shkodran Mustafi was not among the players who made the trip to the north east.

Newcastle v Arsenal: Premier League match preview

The Arsenal head coach had indicated before the game that he would prioritise selecting players who "I am very convinced can perform now at 100 per cent", indicating that many of those who joined pre-season later in the summer would not feature from the outset in the season opener.

Arsenal XI: Leno; Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Chambers, Monreal; Xhaka, Guendouzi; Mkhitaryan, Willock, Nelson; Aubameyang
