Confirmed Arsenal XI vs Boreham Wood: Balogun starts; John-Jules, Amaechi on bench

Steve Boud has named his first side as Arsenal Under-23 manager, with Fol Balogun starting up front and a host of the brightest names in the Academy left on the bench.

Highly-rated young striker Balogun, one of the stars of the U18 side last season, leads the line with Trae Coyle in support. Karl-Jakob Hein, the first signing of the Unai Emery era last summer, starts in goal with Arthur Okonkwo having dropped out of the squad.

The highly-rated trio of Xavier Amaechi, Tyreece John-Jules and Sam Greenwood have been left on the bench but Bould is likely to rotate his side heavily during the 90 minutes against Conference side Boreham Wood.

The match was initially intended to feature a mixture of first-teamers and youth players but the Gunners' progress to the Europa League final delayed their return to pre-season training, meaning that it is instead a mixture of Under-18 and Under-23 players in the Arsenal XI.

For the first time since 2012 Bould is taking charge of a youth team match as well. The three-time top flight champion with Arsenal left his role as Unai Emery's assistant in the summer, swapping with Freddie Ljungberg to take charge of the U23s.

Bould previously managed the U18s, winning two youth Premier League titles and the prestigious FA Youth Cup in 2009.

The U23s head coach is without youth team stalwarts Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock, all of whom have been promoted to join Emery's first-team for pre-season training.

Arsenal XI: Hein; Swanson, McGuiness, Medley, Thompson; Smith, Burton; Olayinka, Coyle, Tormey; Balogun

Substitutes: Hillson, Dennis, Azeez, Olowu, Clarke, Amaechi, Cottrell, John-Jules, Greenwood, Aleblosu, Ogungbo, Matthews
