Confirmed Arsenal starting XI vs Everton: Ozil starts but Xhaka, Koscielny, Ramsey miss out

Mesut Ozil has been handed a first start in an away league match this year as Arsenal bid to move into third away to Everton.

Ozil has not started a Premier League away game since the draw at Brighton and Hove Albion on Boxing Day, a match in which he was hauled off after 45 minutes.

Also in the starting lineup with the German are Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who replaces Alex Iwobi, and Mohamed Elneny, who makes his third league start of the season.

Laurent Koscielny and Granit Xhaka have failed to recover from their injuries in time. The latter had trained on his own on Saturday as he recovers from groin problems.

How Mesut Ozil won back Unai Emery's trust and became a crucial cog in the Arsenal revival

Meanwhile Aaron Ramsey had limped out of Monday's game with cramp but returned to training on Friday, giving him sufficient time to recover for the trip to Merseyside. However he is only named among the substitutes.

He is joined on the bench by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has recovered from the high temperature that forced him to be left among the substitutes for the win over Newcastle.

The Gunners are without the suspended Lucas Torreira, serving the final game of a three-match ban after his red card against Tottenham. Meanwhile Sokratis Papastathopoulos is walking a disciplinary tightrope: if he is booked today he will miss Arsenal's next 10 matches having accrued 10 yellow cards this season.

Arsenal will move third in the Premier League with a win, leapfrogging Tottenham and tightening their grip on a Champions League qualification spot.

"It's a big challenge, away [from home] we want to achieve the same good performances as when we play at Emirates Stadium," Emery said.

"We have confidence now but we know it’s very difficult and I think it's a long way until the last matches.

"Now, each match is worth three points, like Sunday against Everton, which is the most important. We know other clubs will take a lot of points."
