Confident Sean Longstaff on why Newcastle United 'will be alright' this season

Sean Longstaff says Newcastle United “will be alright” this season as he said the squad are blocking out the negative noises surrounding the club.

United changed the narrative with an uplifting defeat of Manchester United that saw his younger brother Matty hit a fantastic debut goal. But it has been a strained start to the season with heavy defeats at Norwich and Leicester causing plenty of criticism for the club and especially Head Coach Steve Bruce.

The heavy loss at Leicester even saw speculation about whether Bruce would last until the end of the season but he’s bought himself time and he remains very popular among the players – who will be given a few days off over the weekend as we enter another international fortnight.

Newcastle don’t play again for 10 days when they travel to in-form Chelsea but they will go to South London with renewed belief after their win over Manchester United.

Longstaff admits the season has been up and down so far but believes the foundation for better results was laid on Sunday with their excellent 1-0 win.

“It has been turbulent so far but the win on Sunday gives us a platform to go on,” he said.

“Within the group and within the club we’ve stayed very level. Obviously there’s been two great results in Tottenham and Man United and there’s been a couple of disappointing ones in there but you’ve got to stay level headed.

“There’s going to be some good times and some difficult times and it’s about ignoring, as bad it sounds, everything that’s around the club and just sticking together.

“We know the only people who can change anything are within the football club and as long as we’re all reading off the same script and fighting for each other we’ll be alright.”
