Seiji Ozawa, a prominent world-class conductor, will not perform at the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival scheduled to be held this summer in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, due to his physical condition. The organizer of the musical event announced the change of conductor on Friday.
The 82-year-old Ozawa was scheduled to conduct Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at three concerts during the festival, which is to be held from August through September. Ozawa is the artistic director of the festival.
Ozawa was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and hospitalized in March. While rehabilitating he said in a message, "It will take some more time for my stamina and muscular strength to properly recover." He will, however, join rehearsals for each concert.
