Condé Nast Traveller names Northumberland as one of UK's most romantic getaways

Still panicking on what to give your other half for Valentine's Day?

It's not too late to book a trip to Northumberland for the coming weeks or months, and according to one travel magazine, it's one of the most romantic getaways in the UK. Condé Nast Traveller named Northumberland on its list, using the logic that a weekend away in the UK can be just as romantic as a rustic Italian hotel or a remote Greek island.

It comes after Embleton Bay was named among wonderful walks across the UK to enjoy on Valentine's Day, and the travel experts at Condé Nast urged visitors to look further than Hadrian's Wall and Bamburgh. Recommendations included a boat trip out to the Farne Islands, and pottering around Alnwick and Alnmouth - with the latter having been previously named one of the most beautiful villages in the UK and Ireland by the magazine.

Of Northumberland, the travel magazine wrote: "This English county is so far north, it’s often overlooked. All the better for those who do make it here, who achieve the smugness of exploring heart-stoppingly beautiful landscapes without the crowds.

"Of course, everyone knows Hadrian’s Wall and Bamburgh, but Northumberland has still retained its raw beauty and old-school appeal. The county’s boundaries unfurl out to the east coast, where you’ll find pubs serving the freshest seafood supplied by local fishermen (book The Ship Inn at Low Newton).

"The coast is also a great jumping-off point for the likes of the Farne Islands, where you can spot birds and sea life at astonishing rates. Inland, there are some of the most beautiful villages in the UK to potter around (we like Alnmouth and Alnwick)."

The magazine also recommended staying at the Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland. To read the full article on the UK's most romantic getaways in Condé Nast Traveller, click here.
