Conde Nast Traveler's 22 places to go in 2022 includes some eclectic picks

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Like many travel magazines, Conde Nast Traveler is looking ahead to travel trends and destinations for the coming year. But CN Traveler editors have taken a different tack, choosing destinations, digital director Stephanie Wu says, "based on some of our favorite reasons to travel, from exhilarating food and drink scenes and historic sites to explore, to new places to soak in the great outdoors."

The resulting "22 places to go in 2022" list hopscotches around the world and includes some eclectic picks. The food category, for example, starts with a shout-out to Birmingham, Alabama and five-time James Beard finalist Rob McDaniel, whose contemporary Southern grill serves up angel biscuits alongside barbecue meats. The entire country of Serbia is on that list, along with Norway's Trondelag County.

There are destinations for arts and culture devotees, history buffs, outdoorsy types and even travelers who prize mode of transportation above all else, whether it's cruise ships or bullet trains.

Here are the North American options from the list:

— Birmingham, Alabama (food)

— Alberta, Canada (arts, culture)

— Charleston, South Carolina (arts, culture)

— Querétaro, Mexico (history)

— Great Lakes, U.S. (transportation)

— Honduras (outdoors)

— Panama (outdoors)

— West Virginia (outdoors)
