Concussion behind Greenwood AFL retirement

Collingwood's Levi Greenwood has announced his AFL retirement, citing fears over the damage further bouts of concussion could do to his long-term health.

Greenwood suffered delayed concussion after a collision with West Coast's Nic Naitanui in April and, while he has since overcome the symptoms, has not played at senior level since the round-five incident.

The 32-year-old made the decision to retire after discussions with Collingwood doctors and consulting concussion specialists outside the club.

Greenwood played 160 games with the Magpies and North Melbourne over 13 seasons and has a history of concussion.

He told Collingwood players and staff of his decision on Monday and will continue to work with the club as a part-time VFL coach.

"It was great to be able to thank the players and staff at the club today, and I am looking forward to extending my appreciation and reminiscing with those that have supported me across my career," Greenwood said.

"Bucks (Nathan Buckley) being one, who particularly over the last few years has been an incredible coach and friend.

"Stepping away from my playing career will be a readjustment. However, I'm excited for the opportunity to work as a VFL coach and assist with rehab for the remainder of the season, allowing me to put my health and my family first."

Greenwood was selected by North Melbourne with pick 32 in the 2007 national draft and arrived at Collingwood during the 2014 trade period.

He featured in the Magpies' 2018 losing grand final side.

Greenwood suffered a serious knee injury during the 2019 finals series and managed just eight matches in his final two seasons.
