Concours of Elegance is on course to be glorious

A LUCKY few petrolheads will get to mingle with automotive royalty from Friday and over the weekend.

Despite all the obstacles created by the coronavirus crisis, the renowned Concours of Elegance at London’s Hampton Court Palace is still going ahead.

And organisers have pulled together a stunning array of cars for the restricted number of visitors to enjoy in a Covid-safe environment.

Among the highlights will be a selection of rare, iconic Ferrari racers, including a 1962 prototype 250 GTO said to be worth more than £40million.

Another vehicle likely to catch the eye is the coachbuilt masterpiece that is a 1938 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Gangloff.

It will be joined by the only Jaguar XK150 S by Bertone, dating from 1957, thought to remain on the road, as well as a prized 1928 Bentley 4.5-Litre Drophead sports coupe.

Other superb rarities include a 1939 Alfa Romeo 2300B Mille Miglia and 1951 Alfa 6C 2500 SS, a 1953 Porsche 356 America Roadster and early 60s Facel Vega Facel II.

The centrepiece will be a collection of McLaren F1 GTRs that dominated the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. There’s also a focus on 70 years of Formula One, with a 1993 Williams Renault FW15C among the exhibits.

Organisers can perhaps rightly claim that the event isn’t just safer than ever, but more exciting, too.
