Concerns raised as one of Dublin's largest homeless hostels Brú Aimsir on Thomas Street set to close

Concerns have been raised over the imminent closure of one of Dublin's largest homeless hostels.

The Brú Aimsir hostel which is operated by charity Depaul is set to close its doors for the final time by the end of June.

The sudden closure of the Thomas Street facility will see an increased capacity at three other locations in the surrounding locations to replace the accommodation from Brú Aimsir.

Anthony Flynn, CEO of Inner City Helping Homeless, said on Twitter: "With the imminent closure of Dublin’s largest hostel facility I have been liaising with the Director of Services Eileen Gleeson.

"To say the least I am not confident that enough beds will be put in place in time or that adequate supports will prevail. Homelessness is in turmoil!!"

The establishment provides overnight emergency accommodation for up to 100 people each night.

The hostel was opened in October 2015 and was supposed to be just a temporary fix for people sleeping rough during that particular winter.

Those in need of accommodation could use the hostel on a one-night only basis.

Sinn Féin's housing spokesperson, Eoin Ó Broin, told RTE it was concerning that the closure had been "deliberately kept out of the public domain".

"Will all of the people currently accessing emergency beds at Brú be accommodated later this week? If so where and when?"

The Dublin Mid-West TD also questioned whether those being relocated would have the same level of support currently being provided by Depaul.

The DRHE said some of the replacement beds would be in 24-hour facilities, compared to the overnight-only service currently available at Brú Aimsir.
