Concerns raised after caravans turn up near sports pitch in Newport

Residents in Newport have raised concerns after a host of caravans turned up in a cark park next to a popular sports pitch.

Police say they are dealing with a "Gypsy and Traveller encampment" in Newport International Sports Village after "concerns raised by the local community."

The caravans are currently staying in a car park next to the FAW National Football Development Centre in Lliswerry.

It is the latest in a number of incidents involving unauthorised encampments in public spaces in recent weeks; Newport council is currently exploring possible access restrictions in a public park in Duffryn after 30 caravans arrived there and antisocial behaviour was reported during the summer.

Earlier this summer, a Newport Member of the Senedd called for an "urgent review" of Welsh Government guidelines on unauthorised encampments, which currently restrict local authorities from evicting illegal encampment during the coronavirus pandemic.

Newport West MS Jayne Bryant said at the time: "Whilst I fully support the practical reasons behind limiting evictions during a pandemic, the law as it currently stands is restricting local authorities from being able to enforce illegal gypsy and traveller sites effectively.

"It's frustrating for all involved."

A spokesperson from Newport Live said it was working with police and the local authorities in relation to the latest encampment.

"We are currently dealing with an unauthorised encampment at an overflow car park directly adjacent to the FAW Headquarters on Newport International Sports Village.

"We are working with Gwent Police and the local authorities to manage the situation, in line with Welsh Government guidelines."

A statement from Gwent Police said: "Gwent Police is aware of a Gypsy and Traveller encampment in Newport International Sports Village and is currently working with partners following concerns raised by the local community.

"Anyone with concerns about this incident or similar can contact us at any time on 101 or via direct message on Facebook and Twitter."
