Concerns raised about 'shot bars' coming to West Dunbartonshire

The dangers of low priced ‘shot bars’ have been highlighted by the chair of West Dunbartonshire’s Licensing Board.

Paul Smith raised his concerns about the low-priced bars during the board’s AGM last week.

Although explaining no such bars exist yet in West Dunbartonshire, Mr Smith highlighted the dangers of the establishments – where shots can be sold for as little as £1.

He told the meeting: “People are entering these shot bars where shots are accumulated at ridiculously low prices.

“They are only open at night-time and people are coming in and buying shots for as low as £1.

“There appears to be instances where they are not complying with minimum pricing.”

Mr Smith said the products sold in the bars contain dangerous levels of alcohol.

“These shots contain straight sambuca, straight vodka and competitions called ‘spin-the-wheel’ where the customer
must drink the shot that the arrow lands on. The consequences are people coming out and vomiting all over the street.

“Some of these shots are named things such as ‘Methadone Mick’, ‘Urine Sample’, ‘Pink Pussy’ and ‘Mad Scientist’.

“This contains Sambuca, Absinthe, Tequila and Worcester Sauce.”

He added: “They are not currently in the West Dunbartonshire area but it has been brought to my attention.

“It’s a sad indictment that after all the progress that has been made by the Scottish Government we seem to be falling back into a situation where this type of retailing is appearing on our high streets.”
