Concerns over future of Hutcheson's Hall as A-listed hospital turned restaurant lies empty

Glaswegians have called for action over the empty Hutcheson's Hall in Merchant City.

The A-listed landmark has been blighted by buddleia, an invasive shrub, since the Hutcheson's City Grill restaurant closed in 2020.

The New Glasgow Society tweeted: "Hutcheson's Hall, once a steak and seafood house in the pre-pandemic world, is now empty. Buddleia started growing at the higher level of the Category A #listed building, which might not be a good news for #Glasgow. BTW the blue clock is almost matching with the blue sky."

Labour MSP Paul Sweeney responded: "I hope NTS will take swift action to remove the buddleia and to fix the defective external lighting that is currently strobing every night."

Another shared: "Hutcheson’s Hall has had a colourful history, from being a public library, bank, school, shops, offices and more recently a bar and restaurant. Designed by one of the great Glasgow architects, David Hamilton, we cannot let another A-listed building fall into disrepair.."

The building was constructed as Hutchesons' Hospital between 1802 and 1805 and also once housed Hutchesons Grammar School.

The National Trust for Scotland, which helps maintain the building, confirmed repair works are planned for later this year.

A spokesman for the National Trust for Scotland said: "We're delighted to announce that we have considerable funds budgeted for maintenance works later this year.

"This important building appears fundamentally sound, but does require some relatively minor repairs."

A further statement added: "We are drawing up plans for works on the exterior of the hall and we are hopeful that these will go ahead later this year."

Rusk & Rusk, which owned Hutchesons City Grill, previously confirmed the restaurant will remain closed in 2020.

They said: "We are excited to have reopened two of our venues so far, The Butchershop Bar & Grill and The Spanish Butcher.

"At present, our focus is on successfully bringing both of these businesses forward. Hutchesons City Grill shall remain closed and any further updates shall be made available over time.”

The company has been contacted for further comment.
