Concerns grow for Alexandria shopping centre which still hasn't reopened

Concerns have been raised over an Alexandria shopping centre which still hasn’t reopened and is owned by a firm fighting for survival.

Antartex Shopping Village in Lomond Industrial Estate is run by Edinburgh Woollen Mill (EWM), which called in administrators over a week ago.

The centre has not been reopened since closing when the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March.

The Facebook page stated it was open until last week when it was changed to “temporarily closed” with the last post written on March 22.

EWM’s website also confirms it “has not yet reopened”.

The Lennox Herald has tried to contact the company’s head office by phone and email but the phonelines are closed and nobody has responded to our emails.

EWM announced its plans to appoint administrators in an attempt to save the business on October 9.

It also has a store at Loch Lomond Shores and owns Peacocks, which has a unit in Dumbarton’s Artizan Centre.

The move puts 21,000 jobs at risk amid what the company described as “brutal” trading conditions.

Steve Simpson, chief executive of Edinburgh Woollen Mill, previously said the past seven months have been “extremely difficult” as he warned normal trading will be “impossible” in the wake of a second coronavirus outbreak.

He said “significant cuts and closures” would be inevitable.

Leven councillor Jim Bollan said if it didn’t open back up, it would be a “blow” to the local area.

He said: “The banks were bailed out in 2008, these small local businesses should also be supported and bailed out by the central government.”
