Concerns Eastwood will 'not cope' as 240-home development set to be approved

Neighbours fear a Nottinghamshire town will be unable to cope if a new 240-home development is given the go-ahead. Broxtowe Borough Council's planning committee will meet on Wednesday, December 7, to decide on the plans for land off Braemar Avenue, Eastwood.

If approved, the development site would be accessed by Chewton Street. The proposed dwellings involve a mix of single storey and two storey buildings varying from two to four bedrooms. It is proposed that 24 properties will be affordable housing, comprising 12 social rented properties and 12 shared ownership.

Eastwood resident Lousie Sharpe thinks the amount of homes is too much. The 42-year-old said: “It’s a big development, for me one concern is traffic.

"The roads won’t cope with the additional cars, it’s already very busy as it is. I think 240 homes is just too many. I understand homes need to be built, this just isn’t the right location. It used to be an old tip, so there’s concern over toxic waste on the site. It is hard because it’s out of all the residents' control.”

A local resident who wished to remain anonymous said that the site isn’t right for the new homes. He added: “It’s awful. If it’s approved I don’t think many residents will be happy. That site isn’t made for homes. I definitely welcome new people to the area but I think it’s the wrong place for new homes. It’s a shame really. The roads, the infrastructure such as schools and doctors, they'll all be affected by it.”

Russ Booth, who has lived in Eastwood for 50 years, told Nottinghamshire Live he usually walks his dog Bryn on the land and said it would be a shame to lose.

The 53 year old said: “It’s a loss of land. There are no facilities, hardly any doctors you can barely get in. The roads will get busier.

“There’s a lot of people complaining. To lose all that green space, it’s useful for horses and dog walkers use it a lot. Regarding where I live it doesn’t affect me but taking him out for a walk, it’s a lovely walk. He loves it out there, he’s used to walking there and knows the other dogs. It’s a real shame.”

Broxtowe's planning committee will meet at 6pm on Wednesday, December 7. It is recommended that planning permission is granted.
