Concerns as city centre nightclub applies for sex entertainment licence

A city centre councillor has raised concerns after a nightclub applied for a sex entertainment licence.

Cllr Nick Small has formally objected to an application by Haus nightclub in Eberle Street, which was recently submitted to Liverpool City Council. No further details of the application have been released at present, but Cllr Small has submitted his objection on the grounds that it would breach the city council's policy around sex establishment licenses.

He also raised concerns about the proximity of the venue to the LGBT+ quarter of the city.

Cllr Small said: "This application breaches the Council’s Sex Establishment Venues Policy which sets a limit on, not a target for, the number of lap dancing clubs in the City Centre.

"We should be looking at reducing the number of lap dancing clubs in the city, not granting licences for new ones. I’m also very concerned about the location in the heart of the city's Gay Quarter in Eberle Street. While I’m sure the business will be managed in an LGBT+ friendly way, I'm still worried about the impact this will have on community cohesion, crime and disorder.”

The licensing application will now come before the council's licensing committee for a hearing where a decision will be made whether or not the licence will be granted.

It won't be the first time Haus will have come before the licensing committee in recent years. In 2019 the nightclub held onto its premises licence despite three knife attacks happening at the premises on two consecutive weekends.

The council's committee stopped short of revoking the club's licence altogether, instead imposing a number of conditions, includng an earlier closing time, the installation of knife arches and ID scanners.
