Concerns about playing surface in Winnipeg arise before Packers-Raiders

There are concerns over the playing surface at IG Field in Winnipeg, where the Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders are scheduled to play a preseason game Thursday night.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, team officials from both the Packers and Raiders are investigating a potentially dangerous patch of field in the end zone.

In the CFL, goal posts are located in the end zones. The NFL has the goal posts anchored behind the end zones, so the field staff at IG Field had to move the posts and replace the patch of field where the posts usually are in the end zone.

It appears the patch could be an issue.

Neither the Packers nor the Raiders would want to risk their players to additional harm for a preseason game.

Packers CEO Mark Murphy told Josh Moser of Fox 11 that the teams are “still in the process of determining what to do.”

The situation brings back memories of the Packers’ canceled preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts before the 2016 season. The game was called off after playing conditions on the field were deemed unsafe for play.

The Packers and Raiders are scheduled for kickoff at 7 p.m. CT.
