Concern over access to services for 'vulnerable people' as Prestwich TSB set to close

The closure of another high street bank has led to concerns over access to financial services for 'vulnerable people'.

The TSB branch on Bury New Road, Prestwich, is set to shut its doors on April 28 as increasing numbers of people switch to online banking.

It comes amid a raft of closures, with branches in Radcliffe, Bolton, Irlam and Manchester all set to cease trading this year.

Eamonn O'Brien, Bury council leader and councillor for the St Mary's area of Prestwich, said he was concerned the trend could leave some people without access to their money.

He said: "First and foremost we have to make sure that particularly older residents who are less able to access online banking or other services are looked after during this.

"That's the first thing, TSB should be insuring that they are bit pushing vulnerable people into difficult situations.

"From a council perspective, we're keen to hear from anyone who struggles to get online or access banking especially in the current climate."

Once the Prestwich TSB is closed the nearest branch will be in Middleton.

In a statement, TSB said the decision to close the locations in Prestwich and Radcliffe was down to changes in how customers are banking.

Around 80 percent of customers in the area no longer visit their local bank branch and instead rely on other branches or online services, the company said.

A TSB spokesperson said: "The decision to close our Radcliffe and Prestwich branches was not taken lightly, but our customers are banking differently – with a marked shift to digital banking.

“We are working with the Post Office to ensure our customers can continue to access some banking services. The nearest Post Office is less than a mile away.”

TSB is offering support to people who are trying to change the way they use bank services, visit www.tsb.co.uk/contact-us or call 0161 4059 990 for more information.
