Concern for elderly people seeking health treatment after closure of Boulevard Medical Centre

The closure of a Nottingham medical centre has sparked fears that it will be more difficult for elderly patients seeking health care treatment.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) officials made the decision to shut the Boulevard Medical Centre, in Western Boulevard, amid concerns for the "welfare and safety of patients".

It has around 1,800 patients and Dr Marcus Bicknell, registered manager at the service, said it had been closed because it was not of a "modern enough standard".

It is the second health centre belonging to the Beechdale Medical Group to close in recent weeks, coming after the health watchdog closed the Strelley Health Centre on June 5.

Some local residents said the latest closure could have an impact on the elderly population.

Umesh Nandha, 47, a jeweller, said he had seen the service "go downhill" and decided to move.

Mr Nandha, who has lived on Western Boulevard for 18 years, added: "It's a shame. It will have an effect on people as a lot of people used it.

"There are quite a few elderly down here on both sides of the road.

"I'm not sure how, without transport, they will be able to get to the nearest medical centre now.

" I have noticed the service did go downhill. I was a bit concerned so that's why I shifted."

John Carvin, 71, who lives on Newlyn Road near the service centre, said: "My neighbour goes and she's not very good on her feet, and if the doctors' is not close she will struggle.

"It will have an impact. There are a lot of people who go from this area. We've lost the Strelley one as well."

Faiza Malik, who has lived on Western Boulevard for 19 years with her son, Sohail, said she was "disappointed" and "concerned" to hear the news.

"I have a few friends who have said the doctors' is fantastic," she said.

"I've heard nothing but good things about it so I'm shocked to hear this.

"I was thinking of moving to it, I almost did a couple of months ago.

"I'm surprised as there were a lot of patients. It's a bit concerning really."

The health centre had previously been rated 'good', and Dr Bicknell said the patient list had been transferred to The Beechdale Surgery, in Aspley.

"The CQC has now inspected all four of our sites and they have closed two of them," Dr Bicknell said.

"We have provided care to patients for over half a century at the site but it has changed very little as a building in that time.

"The CQC said the premises was not of a modern enough standard."

Dr Hugh Porter, chair of Nottingham City Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We completely support action taken by regulators to protect the welfare of local patients.

“Although the transfer will cause disruption in the short-term, it’s essential that all primary care services can meet the standards expected by the Care Quality Commission.

“As a CCG we are mindful of the impact these changes will have on patients and are working with the practice to ensure patients are supported.

“These arrangements are intended as a short-term solution while we explore other options.

“All patients will receive a letter explaining the transfer, with advice on how to re-register in the local area if they prefer.

"We are also working closely with staff at the practice to make sure that patients have appropriate access to care and treatment.”

A spokeswoman for the Care Quality Commission added: "CQC carried out an inspection at The Boulevard Medical Centre, Nottingham, on June 27.

"We are taking action to protect the welfare and safety of patients. While our legal processes do not allow us to go in to further detail at this time, we will publish a report in due course."
