Concern as youths spotted climbing on rooftop scaffolding in Belfast city centre

Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of a vacant building in Belfast city centre after youths were spotted climbing on rooftop scaffolding.

Last month a group of young people were seen climbing across the scaffolding on an abandoned building on Lower Garfield Street, sparking concern among local business owners.

The scaffolding has been in place on the building for a number of years without any work being carried out on the site.

Barry Rylands, manager of the Deer's Head said: "This scaffolding has been up on this building for years now and there has been no work carried out as of yet.

"It has begun to attract unwanted attention and there have been a few occasions where I have seen young people climbing on it like it was a climbing frame.

"Something needs to be done so that this does not happen again because there could very easily be a very serious accident if someone was to fall from it."

In 2018, plans were approved for the building where the scaffolding is located to be partially demolished and refurbished, however no work is yet to have taken place.
