Concern as Nottingham tram 'crammed' full of people in Old Market Square

Concerns have been raised by a Nottingham tram passenger after it became 'crammed' during a journey.

The passenger, who asked to remain anonymous, says he was travelling home after meeting a friend on Friday, June 4.

When the tram arrived in Old Market Square just after 11pm, he says a number of young people "crammed" themselves inside.

While coronavirus cases are generally much lower than they have been in the past, thanks in part due to the vaccine roll-out, the new and potentially more transmissible Delta variant (which originated in India), now makes up more than 85% of all new cases in the city.

David Johns, interim director of Public Health for Nottingham City Council, says he expects infection rates in the city to continue to increase into the next week.

It comes as restrictions continue to be eased, with plans still in place to remove all of them from June 21.

He said on Friday: "We are at the cusp at the moment and our understanding of where we will head in a few weeks is a bit unknown."

As a result the tram passenger raised his concerns.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "It is a tough job on [NET staff] but it was uncomfortable.

"It was crammed on the tram. There was no real way to move. There are other ways to get home, like a taxi."

NET has in the past used a PA system to tell passengers not to ride a tram if it is too busy and services have returned to normal operations, with more running at peak times.

The company, however, has emphasised it has no formal powers to enforce social distancing, which is still encouraged alongside the wearing of masks while on-board.
