Concern as Gyles Brandreth wears 'inappropriate' outfit on This Morning during heatwave

Celebrity Gogglebox star and former MP Gyles Brandreth sported a Christmas jumper as he appeared on This Morning on what is predicted to be the hottest day of the year.

The 72-year-old chose to wear a blue penguin jumper - something that sparked concern amongst viewers and presenter Alison Hammond. But some found his explanation for choosing to wear the jumper even more odd.

During this appearance on the show, Alison Hammond said: "Can we just talk about the jumper because you look very, very hot in there." So which Gyles was quick to respond: "I do not look hot. Not a bead of sweat. Think of a thermos flask full of hot cocoa and stays hot, put ice in it and the ice stays cold so this is the idea.

"That's why you have a cup of tea when it's hot, it cools you down. This keeps me cool and also you are what you wear. I think cool, I'm a cool penguin today."

This prompted viewers to take to social media to share their thoughts on both his outfit choice - and his explanation, YorkshireLive reports. One user said: "#ThisMorning - I hope you have good air con, Gyles will die of dehydration." Another asked: "Gyles are you OK in that jumper hun."

Someone else tweeted: "Sorry to be a killjoy but it’s actually irresponsible having Gyles on explaining that it’s ok to wear a jumper on a hot day and will keep you cool because it’s not true!" Another user agreed, writing: "There will be a few vulnerable people out there watching #thismorning that may take Gyles' advice that wearing a jumper keeps you cool. Think they need to clarify that it does not."

Some argue that wool, such as merino wool, can actually keep you cool in summer as it is an excellent temperature regulator due to its ability to absorb perspiration into the heart of its fibre. But the government advises to wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light coloured cotton clothes in hot weather as well as head wear to reduce exposure to the face, eyes, head and neck.

The website states: "When exposed to direct sunlight, cover your skin with clothing giving good protection; examples are long-sleeved shirts and loose clothing with a close weave. At home wear as little clothing as necessary."

Public Health England also advises to wear light clothing, sunscreen and a hat outdoors. It comes after the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office issued a Level 2 heat-health alert for the South West, East Midlands, West Midlands, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber regions.

A Level 3 alert has also been issued for the East of England, South East and London regions. Both alert levels will be in place until 9am on July 15, with warm weather forecast across the country throughout the course of next week.

Highs of up to 33C are forecast for some parts of the UK and people are advised to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm and to avoid physical exertion.
