Concern ahead of 'Freedom Day' in Durham as over 20,000 people are yet to take up vaccine offer

Across County Durham, almost 300,000 people have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

However, it has been revealed 20,000 people aged 40 and over are yet to have their first dose.

Data based on PHE, NHS England and ONS statistical releases shows that 376,982 County Durham residents have received the first dose of the vaccine which is approximately 85.9%.

A total of 295,437 have received the second dose of the vaccine which equals 67.3% of the region's population.

As Covid cases continue rise in the run-up to Freedom Day, residents are being urged by local authorities to get vaccinated in order to prevent the spread of infections and keep case numbers in control.

England moves to step 4 of the roadmap on Monday 19 July and people yet to be vaccinated are being urged to do so in order to protect themselves and their community.

A spokesperson for Durham County Council said: "Almost 300,000 people in County Durham have taken up the offer of two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine which is fantastic news.

"However, a further 20,000 people aged 40+ are yet to have their 1st dose which is a concern. England moves to step 4 of the roadmap on Mon 19 July and if you haven't already, please protect yourself and our community by getting a jab.

"Vaccines protect most of us from serious illness and help to reduce infections. For all the latest data please visit http://durhaminsight.info/covid-19."

Further Covid vaccine sites have opened up across the region to cope with amount of people waiting to receive their first and second dose.
