Concern after Lenton fire in derelict building near student area

Residents are concerned about the cause of a fire that broke out in a derelict building, with one stating she thought it could have been the result of bad behaviour. Crews had been called following a fire on Faraday Road in Lenton and the fire services say it was a small rubbish fire that started on the ground floor of a derelict building.

Nottinghamshire Live went to Faraday Road to get local residents' impressions of the incident. Student Leah George, who lives near the road, said: “It could have been antisocial behaviour. I know it happens, especially in the student areas.”

Student Rose Shepherd witnessed the crews going to the fire location, however, she was also unable to see the fire. “Lots of fire engines came down Cycle Road, and Faraday Road was closed up to Cycle Road," she said. I could see lots of flashing lights from my back window for about an hour or so.”

The fire service say the rubbish fire was started on the ground floor of the building and was then extinguished by two crews, one from Highfields and the other from London Road, who arrived on the scene. On eyewitness told Nottinghamshire Live they couldn't turn onto Faraday Road from Derby Road as the fire service had taped the road off at approximately 9.30pm.

Lucy McKeown, a student who lives on Faraday Road, said she saw the incident when heading to the pub. "We saw the fire truck at the end of the road and assumed it was a household accident initially,” she said. “I was surprised by it, it definitely took me back a bit but if it was in a derelict building then I can’t imagine being any malice to it.”

Sukhraj Ghataore, a student, who also lives on the road, added: “A friend of mine messaged me to say the road was blocked off, and that sounded a bit more worrying but when we got outside, it didn’t seem there was any trouble.”

PhD student, Albert Gibbs, who used to live on Faraday Road stated: “It is interesting because this kind of area of Lenton is slightly different from the student areas around. It is more families and not students basically, so I don’t know if anyone would start a fire on purpose or whether it was just an accident. ”

According to the fire service, the fire was extinguished by two crews, one from Highfields and the other from London Road who remained at the scene until around 10.20 pm on Monday April 4.
