Con O'Callaghan says county stars will understand if season kick-off is delayed

Con O'Callaghan believes inter-county players will understand if GAA chiefs have to delay the start of the season - or even scrap the National League altogether in 2021.

Already the start of pre-season training has been pushed back until the end of the month following the massive increase of positive Covid tests in the new year and further restrictions.

The GAA was forced to bring the shutters down on the National League last March before being completed in a condensed format last October, leading into the championship.

"Public health and the Covid situation is far more important than sport," said O'Callaghan, a key member of the Dublin side that claimed the six-in-a-row last month.

"If it has to be put back for a while or we have to adapt like we did this year, so be it.

"Everyone really understands that there's something bigger at play here, that sport is only a small part of life.

"Everyone will get the same amount of training time. There’s not going to be a massive advantage for anyone."

O'Callaghan lives at home with his parents and said: "They're not elderly but you'd be conscious of that, and that you don’t want to catch it.

"We'll be guided by public health and the guidelines there.

"In terms of February I don’t know, we'll just follow whatever they say. But it did work last year and if it can be run off in a safe manner like that then happy days. If not, we'll readjust.

“We ran a pretty good championship where there weren't that many cases. Sligo were hit pretty bad at the start.

“I can only speak for Dublin but we had two doctors consulting with us the whole time. We're very strict.

"You arrive to training and are straight out onto the pitch. You wear a mask in the dressing-room. It's very much in and out, get home. There's no chatting after or meals or meeting up. It's run pretty efficiently."

The Cuala dual star is in favour of the split season that has been introduced, with inter-county involvement set to end in July before the club game takes over.

"It’s fairer for all parties involved, club and county," he said. "It gives people a break but also a defined structure to be ready for.

"It’s great to be going back into the championship. Whether it will or won’t happen, we’ll abide by the guidelines or restrictions.

"A lot of lads will be happy to keep rolling on. Other teams who didn’t perform as well will be mad keen to have a go at it.

"Maybe they’ll want a couple of weeks’ training before everything starts up, but most parties will be happy enough".
