Computers, electrical equipment and baby wipes stolen during nursery raid

Burglars broke into a nursery and trashed it, stealing computers and various other items.

Holyrood Nursery Salford's manager Becky Lowthian discovered the destruction, upon arriving to open the Eccles Old Road building on Friday morning (February 5).

Doors were allegedly kicked from their frames, windows were smashed and playrooms were vandalised. The suspects also went into the kitchen, emptying all of the cupboards and destroying cooking equipment.

Ms Lowthian said: "Along with our parents, we are devastated that someone would create so much mess and destruction just for the fun of it.

"The children and our teams do not deserve this and we hope the culprits are caught so that they cannot do this to anyone else."

Computers were stolen during the burglary, along with other electrical equipment and 50 packs of baby wipes.

Cary Rankin, CEO of the Bertram Nursery Group, told the Manchester Evening News that one of the biggest issues was finding somewhere for children of key workers to go at such short notice.

He said: "When we heard the news, we were just thankful that no one was hurt.

"We then turned our attention to how we could help those families who were reliant on using the nursery that day and where we could safely relocate them."

Mr Rankin said that they managed to relocate children and staff to other the Swinton, Hope and MediaCity Holyrood Nurseries, nurseries, creating their own Covid-secure bubbles.

He added: "The team did an incredible job reacting to the incident, managing the clean-up and relocating parents.

"We also arranged for a Covid-19 deep clean, as we had to assume any one of the group who entered may have left traces of Covid-19 on the things they touched and areas they trashed.

"It is such a shame and we encourage anyone who knows anything to contact the police"

The nursery re-opened as normal yesterday (Monday February 8).

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "Police were called on the morning of Friday 5 February to a report of a burglary overnight at a nursery at a nursery on Eccles Old Road, Salford.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
