St Columb’s Park improvements will "be of immense benefit to residents and visitors"

Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey has welcomed the completion of public realm works that have improved the access route to and from St Columb’s Park in Derry.

Overall the project has improved the access route to and from St Columb’s Park, as well as the physical connectivity to local communities and the city centre.

The scheme has created a new entrance, pathway and ramped access into St Columb’s park on Browning Drive just opposite the Peace Tree at the Ebrington estate. The existing car park was resurfaced and realigned, drainage was improved and soft landscaping added finishing touches.

Announcing the completion of works, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said: “I am pleased my Department has been able to fund these improvements to the pedestrian entrance and car park.

"The creation of an attractive new pedestrian entrance allows all to enjoy the 70 acre St Columb’s park and scenes of nature beyond. The physical and visual enhancements to the existing car park and pedestrian linkages from the Ebrington estate at the Peace Tree has vastly improved accessibility, safety and use of St Columb’s park.

"My Department is committed to delivering projects which regenerate our urban areas, develop stronger communities and support our town and city centres in their recovery from the economic impacts of Covid-19. The completion of this latest regeneration project at St Columb’s Park contributes to these commitments.”

The project of almost £230,000 was funded by the Department for Communities, The Executive Office and Derry City & Strabane District Council.

This comes just in time for summer events occurring in the city such as the Foyle Maritime Festival, in which the city will benefit from added tourism. The completion of works also comes ahead of the completion of the neighbouring Ebrington Hotel next year.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Sandra Duffy, said: “Council are very grateful for the support of our partners in delivering this Green Infrastructure project to an exceptional high standard, which is another step in the wider regeneration of St Columb’s Park, one of the City and District's most popular green spaces.

"The improvement will improve access and connectivity between the park and Ebrington Square and will be of immense benefit to residents and visitors alike.”
