After allegedly ending eight wars, United States President Donald Trump now has his eyes on preventing a ninth conflict currently happening in Nigeria. Trump recently expressed his views on this issue while speaking with journalists aboard Air Force One.
In addition to outlining his intentions to halt the ongoing war in Nigeria, where “Islamic terrorists” are targeting and murdering Christians, to the interviewers, Trump provided a more comprehensive overview of his plans regarding Nigeria in a Truth Social post on Saturday. He emphasised that he was directing the Department of Defence to prepare for potential action in Nigeria, stating in the post:
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
Among those who responded to Donald Trump’s call for action in Nigeria was U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who commented on the President’s Truth Social post, expressing his agreement with Trump’s position. He also mentioned that the Department of War was gearing up to take action and cautioned the Nigerian Government to safeguard the Christians, or they would eliminate “the Islamic Terrorists” committing these “horrible atrocities.”
In reply, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu assured on Saturday that the country is prepared to collaborate with the American government to restore peace to the situation.
This isn’t the first occasion Donald Trump has voiced his thoughts on Nigeria. Just a day before his aforementioned post, he made a similar statement on Truth Social, calling for action as Christianity is “facing an existential threat in Nigeria.” On Friday, Trump wrote on the platform for his thousands of followers:
“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done!”
