Complete Superman costume from original film could fetch £500,000 at auction

A complete Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve is expected to fetch as much as £500,000 at auction. The famous blue and red suit is one of 1,500 pieces of TV, movie and music memorabilia being put on sale, worth a collective £11 million.

The outfit, which was worn in the original 1979 Superman film as well as its sequels Superman II and Superman III, is expected to fetch between £250,000 and £500,000, according to auctioneers Propstore. Other items in the sale include Darth Vader’s gloves from Star Wars: A New Hope (£150,000 to £250,000) and a Bible used in The Shawshank Redemption by Tim Robbins’s character Andy Dufresne to hide a hammer (£100,000 to £150,000).

Another sought-after item featured in the sale is a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, one of only 500 hardback versions that were issued with printing errors. It is expected to go for between £100,000 and £150,000.

Propstore CEA Stephen Lane said: “Following our Los Angeles Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction in June, which saw some of our best ever auction results, we’re thrilled to be back again with another incredible sale. Featuring a collection over 1,500 lots, we have an amazing array of content, ranging from Fraggle Rock to Friday the 13th – there really is something for everyone.”

A Fraggle puppet from the 1980s TV show Fraggle Rock is expected to fetch between £40,000 and £60,000 - the same estimate as a mask worn by Jason in Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Also available for 1980s nostalgists is a full-size animatronic Johnny 5 robot from the film Short Circuit (£120,000-£180,000).

More up-to-date items include a wand used by Daniel Radcliffe's title character in Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, Wonder Woman's tiara from the 2017 movie starring Gal Gadot and a Batarang used by Robert Pattinson's Batman in The Batman. A Dalek from the rebooted Doctor Who TV series is listed at £8,000-£12,000, with a percentage of the money going to BBC Children In Need.

The auction is set to take place across four days in November at BAFTA 195 in central London. For fans looking to do a little window shopping, there will be a preview exhibition at Propstore's office in Hertfordshire between October 4 and November 2.
