DIG, being a popular Roblox experience, has a deep and rewarding progression system. Rather than leveling up the fastest or rushing to the newest area, it’s about smart upgrades and knowing when to move on. By following the right path for shovels and knowing which quests to pick up and when to fight bosses, you’ll have a much better playthrough. So, here’s a progression guide to help you do just that.
How to Progress in DIG

You’ll begin your adventure in Fox Town, which is the starting area. Here, your goal is simple: dig and sell items until you can afford the Lucky Shovel, which has decent digging stats and will give you the momentum to move on.
Once you have it, your next destination should be Cinder Shores. This area has much tougher terrain but also more valuable loot. The Bell Shovel and Ruby Shovel become available here, both of which are strong mid-early game shovels, though the Ruby Shovel is considered superior due to its power and control.

Eventually, you’ll unlock access to Verdant Vale, where you can get the Jam Shovel. Though nerfed, it is still a decent shovel, but you should rather progress directly to the Spore Spade Shovel for better long-term value.
From here, you are gradually led into late-game areas like Rooftop Woodlands and Shadow Deep, where shovel stats need to be exceptional to handle rarer soil types and boss encounters. Another key part of progression involves glowing holes.
These glowing dig spots randomly appear in every area and almost always contain rare items or unique drops. Prioritize these over regular digs whenever you see them, since they significantly increase your cash flow and let you buy better shovels more quickly.
Complete Quests
Apart from regular digging, there are other things you need to take care of. Among them, one of the major ones is completing quests, typically divided into one-time and repeatable quests.
Finishing these quests rewards you with extra money and even exclusive tools. Prioritize quests that provide repeatable bounties or provide rare items. These aren't just filler activities as they directly support your shovel progression and character strength.
Join the Combat Guild
Apart from Quests, you should interact with one of the most important NPCs, Cole Blood, the leader of the Combat Guild. You can usually find him near the central zones or combat arenas.
His quests revolve around boss fights, and you should always have an active Combat Guild bounty in your quest log. Bosses spawn periodically, and defeating them rewards you with rare loot and even shovels like the Abyssal Shovel or Candlelight Shovel.
Visit Tom’s Bakery
Old Tom, who runs Tom’s Bakery, is another NPC quest-giver. You’ll find him inside a hidden cave while traveling from Rooftop Woodlands to Cinder Approach. His quests can range from being as simple as digging for specific items to even finding rare materials.
Completing Tom’s tasks can grant access to a unique shovel and pastries that provide temporary buffs such as increased dig power, luck, haste, and more. Tom’s quests reset frequently, and unlike some one-time NPC missions, his quests can usually be completed passively while you’re already digging.
Best Shovel Progression in DIG

Each shovel improves digging stats like Strength, Haste, and Luck. The smart approach is to buy based on the price-to-performance ratio.
Try to skip overpriced options unless you need specific perks. Here's a breakdown of how your Shovel Progression should look in DIG.
Level | Recommended Shovels |
---|---|
Level 1 - 7 | Toy Shovel, Training Shovel |
Level 7 - 15 | Ruby Shovel, Bell Shovel |
Level 15 - 25 | Spore Spade Shovel, Jam Shovel, Abyssal Shovel |
Level 25 - 40 | Candlelight Shovel, Archaic Shovel, Frigid Shovel |
Level 40 - 50 | Gold Digger Shovel, Obsidian Shovel, Monstrous Shovel |
Level 50+ | Prismatic Shovel, Starfire Shovel, Solstice Shovel |
Early Game (Level 1 - 15)
Start with the Toy Shovel or Training Shovel. If you’re skilled at the digging minigame, the Toy Shovel is faster. If you’re struggling, Training Shovel offers better control. Once you reach Cinder Shores, skip the Bell and grab the Ruby Shovel. Alternatively, beat the King Crab boss to get a free Abyssal Shovel, which has poor Haste but massive strength.
Mid Game (Level 15 - 40)
In Verdant Vale, the best option used to be the Jam Shovel, but after the nerf, it’s better to get the Spore Spade Shovel instead. It spawns a Luck Totem and can dig through both dirt and rock. If you're tight on money, beat the Candlelight Phantom boss to get the Candlelight Shovel. This one has strong luck and good stats overall, great for free-to-play players.
Late Game (Level 40+)
Here’s where players often waste money. While Frigid and Obsidian Shovels are tempting, save for the Gold Digger Shovel. It grants a Golden Mutation, helping you earn more with less effort. When you’re rich enough, grab the Prismatic Shovel; it's a reliable endgame Shovel, outperforming the overpriced Starfire Shovel, especially when paired with strong Strength Charms.
