Complaints of strange 'chemical smell' so bad people called engineers

People living in parts of Wirral have said there has been a "strange chemical" smell so bad they have called out engineers.

Some living in New Brighton, Seacombe and Wallasey have complained of the stench of gas in the air, particularly overnight on Wednesday, September 15.

The smell was so intense for some they called the emergency gas line in fear there could have been a gas leak.

On a local Facebook group, one said: "I phoned the emergency gas number last night as it was so bad around the Mount Road area last night."

Another said: "Funnily enough I awoke this morning 6.30 it was coming through my window and it woke me up. I phoned the gas company at 6.30 I’m still waiting."

But many said it was an ongoing issue, one said they had called out engineers a number of times, they said: "We smell the gas smell a lot on Belmont Road the engineers have been out a few times and they say they can’t find any leaks and it could be gas clouds floating over the river possibly cause they can’t find the source, it gets quite strong though."

Another said: "I also phoned the emergency gas number last night as it was so bad around the Mount Road area last night."

Cadent Gas who supply the gas across the North West confirmed to the ECHO they had received a number of calls about the smell of gas overnight but near to the Liverpool docks (L21).

They also confirmed they received reports of a smell of gas in the form of a 'gas cloud' but have said they do not believe it is related to the explosion at the Argyle Industrial Estate in Birkenhead.

A spokesperson added: "We are investigating the potential cause of the gas cloud but we have not found any gas escapes that might have caused the smell.

"From time to time we do have a number of reports of a smell of gas in the air which is not related to gas at all. It could be a smell from the docks mistaken to be gas but we will investigate every report that comes to us."

It is important that if you ever smell gas or suspect a carbon monoxide leak you should call the national gas emergency service at anytime, night or day, on 0800 111 999.
